Chipmunk History
  • The Chipmunk was built by De Havilland in Canada and was originally intended to replace the Tiger Moth.
  • It first flew on May 22, 1946 from De Havilland factory in Downsview, Toronto.
  • Mr Wsiewolod J Jakimuik was the designer. He was formerly the Chief Designer with PZL aircraft company of Poland.
  • It was also produced in Britain and was the standard ab-initio (first stage) trainer for the RAF, Royal Navy and Army from the mid-fifties until 1997.
  • The RAF wanted their trainee pilots to use the Chipmunk as a stepping stone to flying the fabulous Mk 16 Spitfires which were still in operation with the University Squadrons.
  • The Chipmunk is powered by a Gipsy Major engine and its max. speed at general cruise is 190 km/hr.  It is fully aerobatic.
  • There are approximately 500 still flying around the world today in the hands of civilians who prize this aircraft for its handling and flying qualities.
